Melissa Chavez is the new Director of Alumni Support, a position Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep created this past summer to assist CRSM graduates. This new addition ensures that all Cristo Rey alumni have access to the resources necessary to successfully graduate with post-secondary degrees. She will visit alumni at their schools and show them how to take advantage of the full college experience. In addition, she will supplement the counseling department by organizing field trips and college representative visits.
Originally from Lake County, she grew up in both Waukegan and Grayslake. Chavez graduated with her Bachelor of Arts in English from the University of Illinois at Chicago. She worked for the state’s financial aid agency, the Illinois Student Assistance Commission (ISAC), immediately after graduation. ISAC is committed to providing free financial and college guidance to low-income, first-generation students. Being a first generation student herself, Chavez is familiar with the obstacles students face and most importantly how to overcome them.
Chavez trained extensively in state and federal financial aid at ISAC. She was assigned to help schools, families, and community-based organizations in the Lake County area. Although she provided supplementary support to 11 different high schools prior to joining our team, Cristo Rey was one of the schools she enjoyed helping the most because of the close-knit community and work ethic of the students. She is excited to be a part of the Cristo Rey team, and Chavez is committed to making sure that current high school students are college ready and alumni are transitioning well at their schools.
