The idea to use CRSM as a vaccination site came together very quickly. As luck would have it, President Kendall and Jewel Pharmacy manager Jim Bolin connected at the exact right time. Mr. Bolin had just learned of a shipment of vaccine coming from the state and had only a week to find a site.
CRSM school leadership sprang into action and with only days to put a plan together, teachers, students and staff volunteers came together and handled all logistics from the time recipients arrived at the building until they left. The operation was so successful that a second event was scheduled to vaccinate an additional 1200 people, bringing the total to 2400.
“When we were searching in Waukegan for a permanent home for Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep, we dreamed of a facility that would not only meet our school’s needs but would have the potential to become a rich resource for the entire community. Now that we are in our new home, we are gratified to be able to host events like the COVID vaccine events for seniors. We are a faith-based school and an important aspect of our mission is encourage students to explore their own faith traditions and beliefs and, most importantly, to think about how they are living out their beliefs on a daily basis. We want them to put their faith into action. It’s the only way we will make the world a better place. Our school strives to model these values by leveraging the campus for our collective, greater good.” Preston Kendall President, Cristo Rey St. Martin
Yara Lucnt, a pharmacy manager and operations specialist with Jewel-Osco, said, “we were so pleased and impressed that Cristo Rey could help – to partner with us to provide the 1a and 1b community with vaccines.”
