As the 2019 school year comes to a close, several of Cristo Rey’s Corporate Work Study Partners take it upon themselves to coach our students on final, summative presentations. The goal of these final presentations vary depending on each Corporate Partner, but often they include highlights of the student’s work over the past year, reflections from the students on what they have learned, and in some cases the students are encouraged to make recommendations on improvements to the program and/or corporate department in which they work. In all cases, the CRSM students are presenting in front of adults and as a result, stepping outside of their comfort zone.
Some of this year’s most notable presentations came from students who worked at AbbVie, Discover Financial, Underwriters Laboratories, US Foods, and Advanced Group. The presenting students worked in departments that included Human Resources, IT, Packaging, Quality Assurance, Culinary Test Kitchens and Recruitment.
- Underwriters Laboratories’ presentation took place on the CRSM campus. Students working in the IT Network Security
Department at UL presented findings about counterfeiting in make-up and electronics and the attendant public health risks involved in those illegal activities. Their work will be included in an on-going project that UL will ultimately send to South Africa. The students ran a Kahoot with their presentation to the CRSM student body. Winners collected a set of Apple headphones, a Starbucks gift card, and a mobile charger.
Kahoot! is a tool for using technology to administer quizzes, discussions or surveys. It is a game based classroom response system played by the whole class in real time. Multiple-choice questions are projected on the screen. Students answer the questions with their smartphone, tablet or computer.
- Students working in a number of departments at US Foods presented statements of work, (SOWs) to internal personnel. A wide range of presentations from multiple departments were created – from color and material analysis in product packaging design to culinary activities in the test kitchen for the Quality Assurance Department.
- At Advanced Group, in Deerfield, the corporate officers attended a luncheon at which 7 students presented a re-cap their work in IT, Human Resources and Recruiting and offered key takeaways from their time at the company.
- This year at Discover Financial, student groups spoke about Innovation and Employee Resource Groups. The student presenters work across many departments at Discover, including: Payment Security, Finance, Card Operations, Accounts Payable, Digital Servicing, Finance & Strategy, Law, Human Resources. Presentations included a synopsis of each student’s involvement in a particular project, a description of the innovations currently being developed at the company and recommendations for future action.
Cristo Rey St. Martin students continue to do remarkable work, becoming trusted employees at our business partner locations. Many are being asked to work this summer – a true testament to their value. It’s been another year of successes for the Corporate Work Study Program and our wonderful partners. Thanks to all!
