February Academic News: Author Wes Moore visits CRSM

Each summer Cristo Rey St. Martin College Prep teachers require our rising juniors to read “The Other Wes Moore”, the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling account of the fate of two men who share the same name and background. The book’s author recently visited CRSM, courtesy of Astellas Pharma US.

Both men named Wes Moore were raised by single mothers in poor Baltimore neighborhoods and both had brushes with the police at a young age. Yet one, the author, grew up to be a Rhodes Scholar, a decorated combat veteran, a White House Fellow, and a business leader.

The other Wes Moore is serving a life sentence for felony murder.

Moore’s book details how he learned of the imprisoned Moore and explores their subsequent correspondence and relationship. In his talk to CRSM students, Moore gave a blunt assessment of the choices and decisions both he and the other Wes Moore faced and made as young men growing up on the streets. Among the lessons he shared with the students were the importance of choosing the right friends for the right reasons and the necessity of remembering that “potential is universal; opportunity is not.”

Moore encouraged the students to take full advantage of the chance that CRSM gives them to gain acceptance to and attend college and reminded them that they “need to dig deep, persevere, and remember that education matters.”
